Pay a bonus, commission, or reimbursement

Click Pay bonuses, Pay commission, or Pay reimbursements on the Pay page, enter amounts, then approve the payroll.

  1. Go to Pay from the sidebar. Under "More payroll options", click "Pay bonuses", "Pay commission", or "Pay reimbursements".

  2. On the "Payment details" step, set the Period start, Period end, and Payday. Choose a Funding option: a bank account or "Wire transfer". For a bonus or commission, you can also turn on "Apply benefit deductions" or "Apply post-tax deductions" under "Deductions and withholding". Click "Save & continue".

  3. On "Who's getting paid", select the people. Bonuses and commissions go to employees only. Reimbursements can go to employees and contractors. Click "Save & continue".

  4. On "Bonus amounts", "Commission amounts", or "Employee reimbursements", enter an Amount for each person. You can add a Description. Confirm each person's payment method ("Direct deposit" or "Off-platform"), then click "Save & continue".

  5. For reimbursements, the "Contractor reimbursements" step always comes next. Enter a Reimbursement for each contractor you selected. If you selected only employees, it shows "No contractors on this payroll", so click "Save & continue".

  6. On "Review & approve", check the totals, click "Approve payroll", then confirm.

Note: "Direct deposit" is only available for people with a bank account that can receive it. "Off-platform" means Freedom doesn't send that payment, so you pay it yourself by the payday.

What is taxed or deducted

  • Bonus and commission: Taxes are withheld. Benefit deductions and post-tax deductions apply only if you turned them on under "Deductions and withholding". Both are off by default.

  • Reimbursement: Not taxed. Reimbursements aren't wages, so nothing is withheld and no benefit or post-tax deductions apply.

The top of "Review & approve" repeats this, for example "Taxes withheld" and "Benefit deductions not applied".

You can't put a bonus and a commission, or a bonus and a reimbursement, on the same payment. Each payment is separate from your regular payroll and has only that one kind of pay on it. To put several kinds of pay on one payroll, see Create an off-cycle payroll. To fund by wire, see Fund payroll by wire transfer. To start over, see Delete a draft payroll. If someone can't be paid yet, see Fix what's blocking your payroll.
