When the approval deadline passes, your workers can't be paid on the original payday. The payroll stays a draft, and you can move it to a new payday.
Open Pay. A payroll past its deadline shows "Overdue." and "Was due" with a date and time. It is under "Upcoming payrolls" or "Late payrolls".
Click "Review & approve" on the payroll. At the top, a red message says "The approval deadline has passed".
In the red message, click the "Payday" date field and choose a date. Dates that are too soon for the bank to process, and bank holidays, can't be picked.
Click "Save payday" next to the date field. The page refreshes with the payroll's new figures and approval deadline.
Check the figures, then click "Approve payroll" and confirm.
Note: If the payroll was generated from a pay schedule, saving a new payday means it no longer follows that schedule's dates, so it can keep the date you chose. Regular withholding, benefits, and deductions still apply.
A draft contractor payroll that has passed its deadline has no "Payday" date field or "Save payday" button. It shows "Delete and start over" instead. See Delete a draft payroll.
