Fees Freedom charges and when they apply

The payroll and tax fees Freedom charges, the amount of each, and what causes it.

You pay these fees only when one of the events below happens. We debit each one from your default bank account, and every charge is listed in Billing with its date, how it was calculated, and its status.

Payroll funding and payments

  • Returned payroll debit from your bank: $100. Applies when your bank returns our debit for a payroll, for example for insufficient funds.

  • Failed payment to an employee's bank account: $8. Applies when a direct deposit is returned, for example because the account is closed or the numbers are wrong.

  • Wire transfer to fund payroll: $10. Applies to each wire you send to fund a payroll. You choose "Wire transfer" as the "Funding option" on the payroll.

  • Next-day payroll processing: $2. Applies when a payroll uses next-day processing.

Tax filings

  • Late tax filing: $150. A filing is blocked when we are missing something we need to file it. Filings close at least 8 business days before the agency's due date. If the filing is still blocked then, it goes out late and this fee applies. To see what is blocking a filing, open it on Tax Filings and follow the steps shown.

  • Amended tax return: $150. Applies when a return that is already filed has to be amended, for example after a correction to a past payroll or a W-2.

  • Printed and mailed tax form: $2 per form.

State registration

  • State tax registration: $199. Applies to each agency, city, or county when you ask Freedom to register your company for payroll taxes. It is one-time and non-refundable, and you confirm the total before you are charged. Some registrations are free and show "Free" at checkout. You are not charged if you are handling the state registrations yourself.

Note: In Billing, you don't pay a charge marked "Waived" or "Refunded". "Processing" means the bank transfer is still clearing, which takes a few business days.
