Change, catch up, or stop a benefit deduction

Change or end an employee's benefit, apply benefits to an off-cycle payroll, or fix a payroll that already ran.

Change an amount

  1. Go to People from the sidebar and click the employee's name.

  2. Open the "Benefits" tab.

  3. Edit the benefit in the form on the "Benefits" tab, then save.

When you review the next payroll, check that the "Deductions & benefits" section shows the new amount before you approve it.

Stop a benefit

  1. Go to People from the sidebar and click the employee's name.

  2. Open the "Benefits" tab.

  3. End the benefit in the form on the "Benefits" tab by setting the end date, then save.

The benefit gets an end date. After that date passes, Benefits > People shows it as "Ended". The table shows "Active" and "Upcoming" benefits at first. To see "Ended" benefits, change the "Status" filter.

Take benefit deductions on an off-cycle payroll

An off-cycle payroll is a payroll you run outside your regular pay schedule. It does not take benefit deductions unless you apply that setting when creating the payroll. When you create one, find "Deductions and withholding" under "Payroll details" and check "Apply benefit deductions". It is unchecked by default. On a regular payroll, benefit and post-tax deductions always apply.

Reimbursements and contractor payments never take benefit deductions, so they do not show this checkbox.

Fix a deduction on a payroll that already ran

  1. Go to Payroll from the sidebar and click "Correct a payroll" on the "More payroll options" card. You can also open the actions menu on a payroll in the payroll history table and click "Correct this payroll".

  2. Select the payroll, if Freedom asks which one.

  3. Choose "Fix a benefit or deduction".

  4. Write the employee's name, the benefit or deduction, and the correct amount in the message, then send the request.

The request goes to Freedom's team, who make the correction for you. A change to a benefit or deduction can change taxable wages and tax forms already filed for that payroll, so Freedom's team confirms the effect and adjusts it.

A deduction is missing or smaller than you expect

On an off-cycle payroll, check that "Apply benefit deductions" was checked. For other causes, see Why a payroll reduced or skipped a deduction.
