  1. Go to People from the sidebar and click the "Add Contractor" button in the top right.

  2. Enter the required details — first name, last name, and email address — then click "Continue".

  3. Continue through the next few steps. Contractor type, workplace, home address, and pay are all optional — set the ones you need, then click "Submit" to create the contractor. They’ll appear in your people list alongside employees.

Note: You don’t collect the contractor’s tax details here. After you add them, the contractor completes their own onboarding for their W-9, taxpayer ID (TIN), and payment method.

Choose an individual or business contractor

On the first step you can set the "Contractor type". It’s optional — leave it as "Select if known" if you’re not sure.

  • Individual — a contractor you pay as a person.

  • Business — a company. Choosing Business adds a required "Business name" field for the company’s legal name.

Attach a workplace (optional)

The next step asks "Associate this contractor with a workplace?" Most contractors don’t need one — attach a workplace only if this person works at a location where your company also has employees.

  1. Choose "Skip (recommended)" to move on, or "Yes, attach a workplace" to pick one.

  2. If you’re attaching one, choose it from the "Select a workplace" list — you can only pick a workplace your company has already set up.

  3. Click "Continue".

Note: You can attach or change workplaces later from the contractor’s profile. Workplaces are managed under Workplaces.

Add a home address

The wizard asks "Add a home address for this contractor?" This is optional — you can add or update it later from the contractor’s profile.

  1. Choose "Add address" to enter one, or "Skip" to move on.

  2. If you’re adding one, fill in the street, city, state, and ZIP code, then click "Continue".

Note: Freedom checks the address. If it can’t be verified, Freedom suggests a corrected version — click "Use this address" to accept the suggestion, or fix what you entered and continue.

Set how much and how the contractor is paid

The last setup step asks "How do you pay this contractor?" Set pay now, or skip it and add it later from the contractor’s profile.

  • Skip — don’t set pay yet.

  • Regular amount on a fixed period — a set amount each pay period. Enter the "Amount" and choose a "Pay schedule".

  • Hourly rate with variable hours — enter the "Hourly rate"; the hours vary each time you pay them.

Click "Submit" to create the contractor.

Note: For a regular amount, pay frequency follows the contractor’s assigned pay schedule.

Invite the contractor to sign in

The final step is "Invite to app". This is optional — send an invitation so the contractor can sign in to the app, or skip it and invite them later.

  1. The contractor’s email is already filled in. Under "Role", choose their access level — "Basic user" or "Admin".

  2. Click "Send invitation" to email them a sign-in link, or "Skip" to finish without inviting.

Note: You can send the invitation later from the People page.
