Transfer your pay history to Freedom

Enter your company's payroll history for this year, check the box, and click Confirm. The task shows only if you ran payroll this year.

Use the "Transfer pay history" task on Onboarding to enter the payroll your company already ran this year with your previous provider. The task appears only if you told Freedom your company already ran payroll this year. It counts toward your onboarding progress.

  1. Go to Onboarding from the sidebar and click "Transfer pay history".

  2. On the "Transfer pay history" page, enter all of your company's payroll history for this year. You enter it in an editor that is part of the page, and its fields and buttons are shown there.

  3. If you need help with the editor, click "Need help? Contact Freedom" at the bottom of the page, or see Contact Freedom support.

  4. Below the editor, check "I've entered all my payroll history for [year]."

  5. Click "Confirm". The button works only after you check the box. Freedom saves your confirmation and marks the task "Done". The page shows "Task complete" with a "Next: [task]" button that opens your next task. If nothing else is open, the button says "Back to onboarding". If you have no tasks left, Freedom takes you straight back to Onboarding. If you see "We could not save your confirmation. Try again.", click "Confirm" again.

Locked until you add your team: Until you add an employee or contractor, the "Transfer pay history" row on the Onboarding page shows "Add your team first" and you can't open it. Add one with Add employees or Add contractors, then come back.

If Freedom is adding your data: If you chose "Freedom will add it for me" on the "Choose who will transfer your data" task, Freedom transfers your pay history for you. The "Transfer pay history" row shows "After you grant access" until you finish "Transfer access to Freedom", then "Freedom is on it". If you open the page, it says "Freedom is handling this step for you. You do not need to add anything here." See What Freedom does when it adds your team and pay history for you.

If you shouldn't see this task: The task is on your list because you said your company already ran payroll this year. To change that answer:

  1. Click "Update your answer" in the note at the top of the "Transfer pay history" page, or click "Change" next to "Payroll history" on the Onboarding page.

  2. In the "Change your answer for [year]?" window, answer "Has your business paid people before?" and click "Confirm".

  3. If you answered "Yes", the window asks "Will this be your first payroll of [year]?" Answer it and click "Confirm" again.

The task leaves your list if you answer "No" to "Has your business paid people before?", or "Yes" to "Will this be your first payroll of [year]?" (the answer that reads "We haven't paid anyone in [year]"). Freedom then shows "Answer saved. You have no pay history to bring over from [year]." If you answer "No" to the second question (the answer that reads "We've already run payroll in [year]"), the window also asks how you handle payroll today, and the task stays on your list.

You can't change the answer after you confirm your pay history, or once Freedom is handling your pay history. On the Onboarding page, "Payroll history" then says why and shows "Contact us" instead of "Change".
