A Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) is the 9-digit number the IRS assigns to your business. It is also called an EIN, and it is written as two digits, a hyphen, then seven digits (XX-XXXXXXX). Freedom files your payroll taxes and tax forms under your FEIN.
Where to find your FEIN
If you don't know your FEIN, look on one of these:
The IRS confirmation letter you received when the number was assigned (notice CP 575).
A Form 941 your business filed before.
If your business doesn't have one yet, you can apply for free at irs.gov.
See your FEIN in Freedom
You first enter your FEIN when you complete Federal taxes in Company Tax Setup. To see it after that:
Go to Company Details in Settings.
Find FEIN in the Company profile section, below Business Address. It shows a lock icon instead of an Edit button, so you can read the number but you can't change it.
Verify your FEIN
Freedom sometimes needs a document that proves your FEIN. When it does, the action item Verify your company's federal EIN appears on your home page.
Go to Home and find Verify your company's federal EIN under Action items.
Select Upload documents to open Verification Documents, then upload a document that shows your FEIN.
While we check your upload, the action item shows "We're reviewing the document you uploaded." If you see "The document must include the federal EIN.", upload a document that shows the number.
Change or correct your FEIN
You can't change the FEIN in Company Details. If the number is wrong, or the IRS gave your business a new one, email [email protected] or click the [email protected] link under the FEIN field in Company Details.
One exception: if a filing in Tax Filings is blocked with "FEIN and tax ID mismatch", select Update FEIN on that filing and follow the prompt.
